CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE
Seniors who sizzle
WHEN JOHN AND I MET we were both in our sixties. He came to me on a winterâs breeze, warmed my heart, renewed my romantic faith and then went home. But one thing is clear, I never have to coax him under the covers or over the moon. And when we hug, he looks at me like I gave him a freaking gift.
Itâs a myth that sexual intimacy has a cut-off date. Sex therapists agree that interest in, and the capacity for, sex continues into our eighties. Sure, it may decrease in intensity but not necessarily. As I write this chapter, it occurs to me that my adult children will be reading this and likely feeling rather ill. Read on kids, youâll get there too.
By the time John moved to Toronto, we had rented a basement apartment and moved in together, but fussy folk questioned my sanity.
âBasement?â they bantered as if it were a socially forbidden class. One friend actually felt justified in ending our friendship, advising that my behaviour was completely reckless. God, I was tempted to tell her she was an alte kaker (crotchety old timer).
For the first time in my life, I truly didnât care what others thought. We were happy in our basement for three years that flew by. Then we purchased a lovely condo, furnished it in Phyllis fashion and threw a party.
John is the love of my life, but itâs not always magic and sweet magnolias. We struggle too. We bicker, we banter and thereâs drama. But the love is strong, and we have a remarkably safe space to work out our issues with respect and kindness. Most importantly, I trust him with my heart.
Just before moving into the condo, I planned Johnâs birthday dinner at our favourite spot, Peterâs Fine Dining. We love the romantic feel of an authentic eighties-style eatery, its waiters and its traditional fare. It takes cozy a notch higher and the food is divine.
After dinner, I noticed that John was a bit distracted. And when he started using his cell phone, it triggered my agitation. A moment later, my phone buzzedâa message from John:
âIâm on one kneeâ¯.â¯.â¯.â
That evening, with a full complement of waiters and diners around us, a grown man got down on one knee with a tiny ring box, a heart of gold and a gorgeous smile. We became engaged as the crowd applauded. And we remain extraordinarily happy.
Do we plan to marry?
Yes. We want to applaud life and showcase love. Whether the lights are on or off, we recognize our oneness and interconnectedness. Although we may have stray greys, itâs not over till itâs over. Sexual fitness is important at any age, and we donât outgrow our desire for sexual intimacy. It may not be the same as it was in our youth, but it can still be a ride you wonât want to miss.
What I found after several months of dating is that all men are not created equally, but they do have something in common.
